Arabica is about 40% of India's coffee crop and almost all of its specialty coffee. It grows higher, has more acidity and aroma, and roughly half the caffeine of Robusta.

Indian Arabica varieties

  • S795 — the Indian workhorse; rust-tolerant, balanced, nutty-chocolatey.
  • Chandragiri — sweeter, fuller body, good disease resistance.
  • Cauvery (Catimor) — higher yield, cleaner acidity.
  • HSD (Hibrido de Timor) — clean, citric, "washed-Ethiopia" character; increasingly kept as specialty micro-lots in Koraput.
  • SLN 9 — an Ethiopian-Sudan cross grown in a few Koraput lots for aromatics.

What altitude and processing add

Higher-grown Arabica (1,000 m+) is denser and brighter. Washed processing keeps it clean and acidic; natural adds body and dark fruit; honey adds sweetness.
