Single-origin
Coffee from one place and one crop. Tastes of that origin and processing.
Buy it when: you want to explore terroir, you brew filter or pour-over, you like variety season to season, you want traceability.
Trade-off: it changes — this year's lot won't taste identical to last year's.
Blends
Two or more coffees combined for a target cup.
Buy it when: you want the same taste every day, you pull milk-based espresso (blends give reliable body and crema), or you're making South Indian filter coffee (a blend by tradition).
Trade-off: individual origin character is smoothed out by design.
It's not a quality ranking
A great blend is a deliberate composition; a great single-origin is a great lot shown honestly. Neither is "more serious".
Try both

Green route
Roasters build blends from component green lots — a Koraput washed base plus a natural for body:

Gray Cup sells Koraput single origins and house espresso/filter blends side by side.
