Timing
Caffeine peaks in the blood 30–60 minutes after drinking. Have your coffee about 45 minutes before you start.
Dose
Around 3 mg per kg bodyweight is the researched performance dose — roughly 1–2 cups for most people. More doesn't add benefit and raises the chance of jitters, racing heart and GI upset.
Tolerance
Regular coffee drinkers get less of an acute boost. Some people cycle caffeine (lower intake for 1–2 weeks) before an event to restore sensitivity. Not essential for everyday training.
Black, usually
Black coffee before training avoids the dairy/sugar load if you train fasted or get stomach discomfort. If you tolerate milk fine, it barely matters.
